ATLANTA, Ga. — With unemployment at a record high, some trying to find work need look no farther than their own home. Hundreds packed a “Work From Home” Expo organized by Women For Hire at the Cobb Galleria to get the details.

“I am currently employed but unfortunately the doors will be closing,” said Helene Perez.
“I was laid off in November,” said Rachel Stewart.
“I was in real estate at the time and everything was collapsing all around us,” said Robbin Gordon.

“Women For Hire” Founder and Expo organizer Tory Johnson said “because of the economy we find a growing number of women with a strong interest to work from home, either to supplement an existing income or generate income while they’re looking for work.”

But if the job sounds too good to be true, it probably is. According to Johnson, 90 percent of advertised job openings to work from home are blatant scams.

“Any time you see something that appears to be a get rich quick or no skill required but you can make a lot of money. Those are red flags. There is no opportunity I’ve come across in the 3 years of researching this subject where you can make a lot of money for minimal effort.”

So how do you find legitimate work from home jobs?

Johnson says you have to do your homework. Research the companies. Speak directly with company representatives. Ask questions.

You can find a list of legitimate companies hiring people to work at home under the appropriate tabs on www.womenforhire.com or refer to Johnson’s book titled “Will Work From Home.”

More importantly, you have to make sure working at home is right for you.

“There is a misconception that working from home is easy…It’s not something easy to do. There’s no easy way to make money right now. It takes discipline to work alone, to not require a manager standing over you, saying do this now,” said Johnson, whose company has organized numerous career expos. “There’s a lot of isolation in working from home, so it’s not for everybody. First, you have to recognize do I have the temperament and the discipline to work from home.”

If you can work independently, the opportunities to work from home are wide-ranging.

Doing medical transcription or direct sales for a variety of companies are very popular. Right now, acting as a virtual secretary or virtual customer service agent are growing areas, where all you need is a home computer and private phone line. And more and more people are working as a self-publisher of their own book.

“I’m able to work from home and make a fabulous income for a company that supports me and able to lead a more wonderful life now that I’m able to work!” said Gordon, who a year ago was laid off but now works at home selling websites.
